How Often Do You Say "NO"

It is strange but most people seem to be predisposed to say “Yes” when saying “No” can give far greater control over ones life. We all have only 24 hours in a day and hence there is a limit to the number of things that we are able to do. Whenever we say “no” to something we leave ourselves in a position to say “yes” to something better.

People often have the feeling that they should say “yes” because they do not wish to offend someone, but it is important to consider how opportunities fit into our life plans. You may be offered a job opportunity that will require extensive travel abroad. However, if you value your family life the job may not fit in with the type of life you wish to lead and a “no” may be the best answer.

Saying “yes” all of the time may mean that you are simply unable to deliver on everything that you promise. You may find that you are saying “yes” in order to be well thought of and yet because you commit to doing too much you are unable to do a good job and hence you are having the opposite effect from that required.

Start by deciding what is important for you in your life and then judge all demands upon your time in the light of that decision. You cannot do everything so do the things that fit in with your life goals. Take control of your time and your life by being prepared to say “no” at the appropriate time.
