How to get more done

We all have “to do lists” in our lives. I am a veteran of the system. I wonder how many of you prepare a list then just start to do things and cross them of. If you are like me you will often have a list with maybe 20 items and because you wish to see the list reduce you start by dealing with the easy things first. I find it strange that when I follow this route there always seem to be as many items on the following days list and I do not seem to have made any progress.

Perhaps you rank your list with an A, B or C according to importance (with A being the most important) and then begin work on one item only to be distracted. Perhaps you find that during the day you keep doing things that were not even on the list when you arrived at work. You work hard all day and cross nothing off the list.

I suspect we have all found ourselves in both of these camps at some time in our lives. I suggest that you try the following idea:

Prepare your list as usual and rank A, B or C as usual. Next look through all those that have been ranked A and choose the single item that is most important for taking you towards your goals. Start that item and do not do anything else until it is finished. Yes you might only cross one item off your list but it will be the single most important thing that you need to do.

Yes I know you have other things to do that are urgent and a crowd of people who want to see you so try this. Set two mornings per week on one side and mark your diary up so that NO appointments can be made for you. Arrive at work an hour earlier than usual and put a do not disturb sign on your door. Tell your secretary that you do not wish to speak to anyone before lunchtime and then concentrate on completing the most important thing that you have to do if you wish to achieve your goals. Your staff will soon get used to the idea that you are not available for those two mornings each week.

Try the idea and see how much you can accomplish. I would be interested to hear if you find this to be of use.
