In order to get a
different result, you must do something differently.
Often we find ourselves in a
circle. We keep doing the same thing and getting the
same result, a result that we do not want. We must
learn that in order to get a different result we
must do something differently.
We often then work harder and harder doing the
same things in order to achieve something that we
want and yet the object of our desire never seems to
come any closer. Why is that?
There is a simple formula that may explain the
problem:
E + R = O
What does this mean exactly?
Event + Response = Outcome
Essentially in any situation, or for any event we
tend to respond in a certain way and that response,
combined with the event produces the outcome. If we
want a different outcome then we have very little
choice but to change our response. If we continually
behave in the same manner then we cannot expect a
different outcome.
If a business has a turnover of £5m and
management would like to increase turnover to £8
then the way that things are done has to change. The
old ways of marketing or customer service may not be
sufficient for the new objective.
If a company has a high staff turnover and the
management wish to improve the situation then their
response has to change. They may need to change
recruitment procedures, improve pay, fringe benefits
or training. Initially the only thing that is
certain is that unless something changes there will
continue to be a high staff turnover.
Of course the same applies in our private lives
and our relationships with people.
You cannot expect to
respond to a situation in the way you always have
and obtain a different outcome.
