My Industry is Different
to Yours
Many businessmen develop the
idea that their industry and their business is
different to every other industry and business. When
faced with a new idea that has come from a different
industry the immediate response is “that idea cannot
work here because my business / industry / customers
are different.”
Most businessmen tend to follow what is happening
throughout their industry and try to be a little
better than the rest of the industry. Unfortunately
most new ideas and most breakthroughs come by taking
ideas from one industry / company / country and
applying them in another industry / company /
country.
The way to leave your competitors behind is to
look at other industries or companies and say “how
can I apply that here?”
It is true that your business may be different in
some ways but in most of the important respects it
is very much like every other business. You are
selling a product or service to people. Like
everyone else your clients make their decision based
upon emotion and then justify their actions with
logical or rational arguments. Like everyone else
your business has to take into account sales,
marketing, cash flow, production, management of
staff and the leadership of the organisation.
The next time that you find yourself saying,
“that will not work here, our business is different”
stop and quietly say to yourself “can I use that
idea in my business?”
