Are You Growing?

Imagine the day. It is a beautiful early morning, late spring early summer. With a clear blue sky and a warming sun you decide to take a walk in the garden. While walking you enjoy the variety of colours in the flowers. Relish the vivid green that leaves have at this time of the year. Birds dart between the trees as others sing. As you slowly walk around the garden enjoy the rays of the sun, the peace and tranquility that can only come in the early morning before the rest of the world wakes up.

On your steady stroll around the garden you eventually arrive at a rose garden and stop to admire a wonderful red rose. The flowers are at the stage where they are full of promise, open but not fully open. Bending down you able to smell the beautiful sent that the flowers give off. Using the pair of secateurs that you always carry while walking in the garden at this time of day you cut the flower and stand up to admire it.

One of the interesting things about life is what happened to that flower the moment that you cut its stem. The rose began to die. This is a vivid example of how everything in nature is either growing or dying. There is no prolonged period where things are stable, they are either growing or dying. Sometimes death comes quickly and sometimes it is a long slow process.

People are the same. Either we are growing; developing, learning something new, becoming a better person than we were yesterday, or we are slowly dying. Yes I know that at some point all of our physical bodies will give out and we may as well accept the inevitable. But if we are not growing, developing, learning something new, becoming a better person than we were yesterday then we have already lost the true meaning of life and are waiting for our bodies to give out.

Unfortunately for the rose, once you have cut its stem there was no way back. The good thing from our point of view is that we can all decide to live life any time we wish. We can all decide to join a class and learn something new. Read a non-fiction book, go to a different restaurant, watch a play instead of the TV, open up our lives and start to live.
